4 January 2025 Saturday Sew Day

Despite the threat of impending snow, the traditional first Saturday in January Sew Day was surprisingly well attended.

Pat Dearden started her block of the month, with a good uptake by members.

Alyson Wells showed a pattern and fabric requirements for her Christmas block of the month to start in April/May.

It was lovely catching up with everyone’s news and being able to have uninterrupted sewing time.

Christmas Social

The final meeting of the year was the annual Christmas Social, a time to relax, have fun and enjoy the refreshments brought to share.

The evening started with members puzzling over two quizzes. Then chairs were formed in a circle to play a game. Each member had brought either a novelty bauble or a pretty one and the object of the game was to try and steal from each other a bauble that you would like to take home. This elicited much laughter and cunning until everyone had a new bauble. After all the laughter and excitement of the game we enjoyed the delicious refreshments, accompanied with mulled wine, tea or coffee.

Thank you Kate for organising the quizzes and Carol for organising the Bauble game. Thanks also go to all members for the delicious refreshments. What a lovely way to end the year. All that was left was to wish each other a Happy Christmas and look forward to meeting again in 2025 for another year of productive sewing.

Mini Workshops

Maggie’s Mini Workshop – 20th November

Appliqued Snowman Cushion or quilt block or bag panel

Despite the dreadful weather 12 intrepid members braved the conditions and met for the evening. Whilst some members worked on their individual projects others took part in Maggie’s mini workshop and had great fun making a Snowman block that could be turned into a cushion, bag or other item of their choice.  Thank you Maggie for running a well prepared, fun workshop. Let’s hope the weather is better for the next meeting.

4 November – Sit and Sew and Mini Workshop – No Sew Bauble

Owing to the cancellation of the last meeting due to the inclement weather and flooding it was lovely to see so many new and old members attending this evening.

Kate had brought along several samples of her No Sew Bauble and gave detailed instructions how members could make one of their own. Members then began cutting and folding fabric which was then pinned to the polystyrene balls that Kate had supplied. It was interesting to see the variety of fabrics being used, some members had chosen to make a traditional Christmas themed bauble whilst others planned to make a bauble for a different occasion.

Our thanks go to Kate helping and guiding us with this mini workshop and making it a very pleasant and cheerful evening.

2 October – Sit and Sew

Whilst members enjoyed a cup of coffee or tea and a biscuit, Adele welcomed three new ladies who had come along to spend the evening with us and hoped they would agree to join the group.

Susie had brought along a collection of ribbons etc which members could purchase.

Kate showed us examples of the Non-sew Bauble she will be demonstrating at the next meeting. A list of requirements will be circulated and displayed on the web site. Those wishing to take part were asked to add their name to the list being circulated.

Debbie briefly told us about the history of Linus Quilts and discussed ones she was currently working on. Anyone wishing to donate a quilt could leave them at Doughty’s in Hereford for collection.

Maureen explained that members had been making 16″ x 20″ all cotton Baby Quilts for the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Hereford Hospital. She showed examples and said it gave members the opportunity to use their left over fabric and practise their free motion quilting.

Members spent the remainder of the evening working on their own projects.
